Pelion Mountain

A lovely place for relaxing and enjoying nature and unique beaches.

Pelion is a lovely place, especially in summer, where you can enjoy the quiet of the mountain and amazing beaches. The villages are small jewels set in the nature with stone houses, secular trees and panoramic view of the sea.

The mountain of the Centaurs

Pelion is the sacred mountain of Centaurs. They were very strong and wise, with human body from the waist and with legs and hooves of a horse. Chiron was considered the wisest of all the Centaurs and was the teacher of many heroes such as Hercules, Theseus, Jason, Ulysses, Achilles and Peleus. The area takes its name from the latter hero. It was Chiron who organized the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, to which all the gods were invited except the goddess of discord who, furious, sneaked in and placed a golden apple with the inscription "to the most beautiful". Apple that will lead to the challenge between Hera, Athena and Aphrodite and which triggered the events that led to the Trojan War.

Portaria

Portaria is the first village you meet coming from Volos. During the Ottoman occupation it was famous for silk production. In the center of the village there is a large square with the typical tree in the middle surrounded by taverns. From the square start many stone alleys towards the church and the houses of the village. Here you can do the path of the centaurs which takes less than 30 minutes and is suitable for everyone.

🍴 Kritsa, a very good taverna in the central square.

🛏️ Archontiko Pantou, a romantic b&b with amazing view from the rooms on Volos bay.

Makrinitsa

It is a the most typical village in Pelion with local artisan shops and a lively little square.

It is known as the balcony of Pelion for its amazing view on Volos bay and also known as the noble village, because it was mostly inhabited by wealthy people that has richly decorated their houses. In the central square there are the beautiful churchof Agios Ioannis Prodromos and a marble fountain, whose crystal clear waters are called Immortal Water.

Tsagkarada

The village of Tsagkarada seems frozen in time. Founded in 1500, it has now alleys and stone houses covered by ivy and the atmosphere in really calm. Here there is one of the 3 oldest trees in Europe, a magnificent secular plane tree which releases its energy and which you can climb.

Beaches

Pelion offers beautiful beaches with crystal water and surrounded by green. The most impressive beaches are on the eastern side of the peninsula, such as Mylopotas, the sandy Plaka, Agios Ioannis, Fakistra, Papa Nero, Horefto, Mourtia. In Damouchari beach were shot several scenes of the movie Mama Mia.

Other Things to Do in Pelion:

  • take the old steam train known as Moutzouris. It departs from Ano Lehonia village, crossed the villages of Agios Athanasios, Agia Triada, Ano Gatzea and Pinakates and arrives in Milies village. It started working in the late 19th century thanks to the Italian engineer Evaristo de Chirico (son of the famous artist de Chirico). After Second World War it was abandoned and few years ago started working again.

  • visit Volos and take a ferryboat to the islands.

  • tasting wines and honey made by local producers.

Have a nice trip!
